The laboratory closely relies on the first-class key discipline of Electronic Information at the School of Future Information Innovation, Fudan University. Committed to serving the sustainable development of Shanghai, it strives to become an important research base integrating scientific research and technological innovation, support for major national needs, cultivation of high-level talents, and transformation of scientific and technological achievements.

Targeting major national needs and the global frontier of science and technology, the laboratory takes intelligent communications and intelligent information processing as its core research directions, with the main mission of realizing systematic control of large-scale intelligent systems in the future. It conducts applied research and achievement transformation focusing on key fields including social governance, smart healthcare, and complex system science, centering on cutting-edge interdisciplinary areas such as multimodal large model technology, intelligent networks and intelligent systems, scientific artificial intelligence (AI4S), quantum machine learning, and quantum manipulation.
In recent years, the laboratory has undertaken a series of major research projects, including the Science and Technology Innovation 2030 "New Generation of Artificial Intelligence" Major Project, the National Key R&D Program, Key Programs of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and the Shanghai Innovation Action Plan. It has published more than 60 high-impact papers in authoritative international conferences and journals, and won over 10 provincial and ministerial-level awards as well as awards from industrial societies.
Six graduate students supervised by the laboratory have received Excellent Paper Awards from the Chinese Institute of Electronics, the Chinese Association for Artificial Intelligence, and the Shanghai Society for System Simulation. Six of its graduates have been honored as Provincial and Ministerial-level Outstanding Graduates and Outstanding Graduates of Institutions of Higher Education. The laboratory has established sound cooperative relations with numerous institutions and enterprises at home and abroad, including the University of Chicago, Boston University, University of California, Davis, Australian National University, University of Liverpool, Hong Kong Baptist University, East China Normal University, research institutes of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and major internet companies.
